Sam Chung
Sam Chung is a young conductor currently completing his undergraduate in musicology and ethnomusicology at Boston University. He has studied violin under BSO member Lucia Lin and first studied conducting under the Colburn School’s Maxim Eshkenazy. In 2019, he was a conducting intern at the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra. The same year, at the age of 18, Sam was named a conducting fellow at the Eastern Music Festival and studied with Grant Cooper, Jose-Luis Novo, and Gerard Schwarz. Sam was a featured conductor in several seasons of the Montecito International Music Festival in La Sierra University, where he also worked with the Schoenberg family to promote and conduct lesser-known works by Arnold Schoenberg. In 2021, Sam, along with Natalie Boberg and Rozime Lindsey, formed the Magari Ensemble in Boston as an incorporated non-profit organization. With Magari, he most recently organized and conducted a performance of J.S. Bach’s Cantata BWV 131, Aus der tiefen, rufe ich, Herr, zu dir, with modern dancer Julia Boberg, applying the concept of Bachian text-painting to choreography. Sam is also a passionate advocate of new music, and is a regular guest conductor of Time’s Arrow, Boston University’s new music ensemble.
