The Magari Ensemble team is brewing some big concert announcements for our upcoming Spring season- but first we have some exciting new announcements and a recap of last year’s concerts!

First things first - we’re expanding!

This Spring, Magari is launching two new branches of our organization in San Francisco (headed by founder Natalie Boberg) and Los Angeles (headed by founder Sam Chung). Don’t worry Boston, Rozime Lindsey is keeping our organization running back East, so keep any eye out for events soon. We are so excited about this bi-coastal expansion and can’t wait to bring our concert experiences to even more supporters across the country!

Welcome, Caroline Jesalva!

As you can imagine, a bi-coastal expansion comes with a few logistical hurdles - but with the support of our new Operations Director, Caroline Jesalva, it’s been a breeze. As a violinist, vocalist, artistic curator, and educator, Caroline comes to us with a background in non-profit & festival leadership, artistic planning, and operational management that has completely revamped our workflow. Welcome, Caroline!

As we gear up for another great year of collaboration and music making, let’s recap Magari’s last season:

Fall 2022 | Schoenberg Visions

In the Fall of 2022, Magari partnered with Larry Schoenberg and the Schoenberg Center in Vienna to present Schoenberg: Visions. We all know Schoenberg for his invention of the 12-tone system, and of course this did influence about every 20th Century composer and beyond, but Magari wanted to look further. So, we went to LA to meet his son, Larry Schoenberg. Larry grew up in a creative home where nothing was thrown away - not even the last bits of a dull pencil. Schoenberg knew that everything could be used to create something new, and had a special room in his house for these things. He was an inventor, a painter, a tennis player, a teacher, and oh yeah… an influential composer! His life's work and legacy showcases what Magari is all about - gathering creatives to show how we can live together vibrantly in one space.

Our Fall concert in Boston featured an interactive gallery of Schoenberg’s manuscripts, teaching materials, portraits, card decks, and more. But no Schoenberg performance would be complete without listening to his genius in action. We worked with remarkable Boston musicians to share his Waltzes for String Orchestra and Pierrot Lunaire.

This past Spring, Magari presented LOST LANDS in Boston- an immersive concert experience visualizing the effects of rising sea levels on coastal area populations. A quick fact check from the World Economic Forum… “630 million people live on land below projected annual flood levels, at risk of rising sea levels by 2100 – compared to roughly 250 million at present.” Natalie started researching rising sea-levels with Jill Gatlin in 2021, imagining how the arts could speak into this issue.

Artists across the globe are responding and Magari added our voice with the help of four composers: Bram Fisher, Avi Randall, Philip Rawlinson, and Ian Wiese. Each composer wrote their piece about a US coastal city threatened by sea levels and Magari musicians brought these pieces to life. Our amazing team of collaborators enhanced our space with art installations & pieces, film, dance, poetry, spoken word, and lighting design.

Our biggest production to date, LOST LANDS used Magari Ensemble's presence to educate our audience. This certainly won’t be our last mission-driven event… What causes are you passionate about? What would you like to see us do next? Drop us a line to let us know! You could even leave a donation to make it happen. We can’t wait to bring more artists into our purposeful space in 2024.

This project was generously supported by New England Conservatory’s Liberal Arts Department.
